I offer a range of editing and publishing services to a very limited number of clients.
Editing Services:
You send me 30 pages of your book manuscript. I’ll read it free of charge and decide whether, in my view, we can productively work together or not.
If I take you on as a client, you then send me the completed manuscript. I’ll read it and make broad but fairly detailed notes for revision, typically using Microsoft Word and Track Changes. For this service I charge $90 per hour; first-round editing for most books will take roughly 10-20 pages per hour.
We then meet in person (masked) or over Zoom to discuss the book’s prospects and development in general, and edits in particular, for an hour. (Again, at $90.)
If at this point we decide to keep working together to develop the manuscript, we set a deadline for the next draft and I do another round of edits at the same rate.
Always keep in mind that there is no telling in advance how long it will take a book to reach its full potential—some take a year, some a decade—and even then there is no guarantee that a book will find a publisher who sees it as a worthwhile investment. As a writer, you may well have something to say; a publisher asks, very practically, whether enough people are going to want to pay to hear it.
Publishing Services
Over the past decade I have also acted as a publisher or publishing consultant for more than 75 books, and I know the opportunities and pitfalls of this aspect of the business very well. I can offer you a clear assessment of your book’s possibilities and let you know the processes and the players involved, and help you create a business plan and a production schedule. For these services I charge $125 an hour.
Please note: I rarely work with more than one client at a time.
